Contactivity is organising a two-day technical training on the 13rd and 14th of September in Leiden, the Netherlands.

This is a technical course, primarily aimed at programmers, power users and administrators, delivering the knowledge needed to set up and extend advanced eZ publish sites. The training costs €900 excl. BTW/VAT and overnight accommodation. Lunch is included.
eZ publish is a popular open-source enterprise content-management system (CMS) and development framework. EZ publish allows the development of professional and customised internet solutions and dynamic web applications.

It can be used to build anything from a personal homepage to a multinational corporate website with role-based multi-user access, online shopping, discussion forums and other functionality. In addition, due to its open nature, eZ publish can be easily plugged into, communicate and coexist with existing IT solutions. With more than 1.5 million downloads and 150,000 installations, eZ publish is trusted by a range of enterprises and organisations around the world. Users of eZ publish include companies such as Hitachi Construction Machinery, National Geographic, Fast and MIT. Topics to be discussed during the training:

1. The internal structure of eZ publish
This part of the training deals with the internal structure of eZ publish by presenting an brief overview of the different software-layers of the system.

2. How eZ publish handles page requests
How does eZ publish process a page request? What functions and templates are called to generate the dynamic page?

3. How to optimize eZ publish performance
To reduce the processing time of templates - which often contain a lot of dynamic elements - eZ publish has developed functionality to cache web pages on the server. Server-side caching may be used to increase the performance of eZ publish.

4. How to implement multilingual functionality in eZ publish
The content model of eZ publish also provides a built-in multi-language framework. This feature is implemented at the version level and allows a version to exist in several languages. This part of the training discusses how to set up multilingual sites with eZ publish.

5. Extension development - How to extend the standard functionality of eZ publish
Extensions are plugins to eZ publish, providing additional custom functionality. Various extensions are available for eZ publish, and custom extensions can be developed to communicate and coexist with existing IT solutions or to extend standard eZ publish functionality.

6. The workflow system of eZ publish
EZ publish comes with an integrated workflow mechanism that makes it possible to perform different tasks with or without user interaction. During the training, the workflow capabilities of eZ publish will be explained in more detail. Creating custom workflow events and custom triggers will also be discussed.
In preparation for the course, we advise attendees to become familiar with the admin interface. They can either download eZ publish and set it up on a server, or use the demo site. Try to create and edit objects, and play around with the functionality.
